After the sold-out performance in January, Aggeliki Toubanaki with “For Women” returns to Half Note Jazz Club for another magical evening on Wednesday, February 12th.
Uncompromising, pioneering, revolutionary women, pirates, witches, and andronikes become songs that unite our souls and awaken our minds.
Something more than just a musical performance, For Women is the dynamic artistic project of vocalist and voice researcher Aggeliki Toubanaki, aiming to honor and tell the stories of great women who inspired composers around the world and became songs in the musical traditions of various peoples.
Women who did not fit into the frame of their time—free, visionary, revolutionary, heretics. Women who loved, suffered, resisted, rebelled against the establishment, and paved their own path.
The narration of the lives of these women through time and space unfolds through texts, poems, and pieces by beloved composers such as Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Tracy Chapman, Lena Platonos, Manos Hadjidakis, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Mikis Theodorakis, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, as well as traditional songs from Greece, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, Anatolia, and Latin America.
Aggeliki, together with her four beloved and esteemed collaborators—virtuosos of traditional and jazz music—have created a multi-dimensional universe, blending natural and electronic sounds, loops, and polyphonies, uniting heterogeneous musical styles. On stage, they cross sounds, emotions, experiences, improvise, interact, and tell the story of For Women, for all of us, about love, unity, and respect for human existence.
The For Women performance is traveling across Greece, and its creators collaborate with local artistic groups sharing a common vision for a society of equality and harmonious coexistence of the genders.

Reviews
“The Half Note was full. It doesn’t surprise me. Those who have seen Aggeliki Toubanaki’s show know… This lady sings in a way that is uniquely hers, a trademark of hers. She takes the stage with some flawless players and true musical companions. And she sings songs about women… she creates a universe of melodies, artistry, interaction, and substance. Aggeliki Toubanaki seems to function as an ambassador of Eru, thanking the ‘Father of all’ with music that essentially carves worlds and universes. We look forward to the next experience!”

“Aggeliki Toubanaki is so tamed by the power of music that she ends up being wild and untamed against any form of it. The way she connects the world’s music is unique… simultaneously transmitting them to the audience, creating a kind of invocation to a force of joy…”
